The following civilizations and cultures had different beliefs, uses, and customs when it came to amazonite:
Ancient Egypt
Amazonite was highly valued by the ancient Egyptians, who used amazonite in jewelry, amulets, and carved ornaments.
Based on their research, historians believe that amazonite represented protection and fertility in ancient Egypt.
Mesopotamia and Assyria
Ancient Mesopotamia and Assyria were both historically significant civilizations in the region called Mesopotamia, which is also known as the “cradle of civilization.” Mesopotamia was located in parts of modern-day Iraq, southeast Turkey, Syria and Iran.
We know that people in the region associated amazonite with Ishtar (Inanna), the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. As a result, these goddess-like qualities were attributed to amazonite’s spiritual meanings.
Amazonite has been found in artifacts dating back to 2000 BC in ancient Mesopotamia and Assyria, where the crystal was used in amulets, decorative items, and cylinder seals.
Cylinder seals were round cylinders with pictures carved on their surface. When rolled along soft clay, the cylinder seals left an imprint of their pictures behind.
Ancient Greece and Rome
The ancient Greeks and Romans used amazonite in jewelry and carved amulets.
There is evidence showing that amazonite was strongly associated with the Greek goddess Athena, the patroness of the city of Athens known for her wisdom, courage, and strategic warfare. This association bestowed the spiritual meanings of knowledge, self-confidence, and protection onto the crystal.
Native American Cultures
In the past, amazonite held spiritual significance among many Native Americans and continues to do so today.
The crystal is linked with healing, harmony, and communication. Some believe that wearing amazonite helps them speak their truth and express themselves more clearly.
Inuit Beliefs
Among the Inuit people of Labrador, Canada, amazonite was considered a sacred stone.
Amazonite was believed to have healing properties and was used in rituals to connect with the spirit world.
The Inuit valued the crystal’s calming effects and used it to soothe emotions and bring peace to troubled minds.

The Stories We Tell About Amazonite
Of course, when you’re such a beautiful crystal, people are going to tell stories about you.
There is one tale I’d like to share with you, and it’s one about amazonite’s association with female strength, courage, and power.
This story is about the Amazons, an all-women group that lived at the edge of the civilized world according to Greek mythology. These women were strong warriors who used men for breeding, but killed any male babies that were born.
The Amazons loved wearing amazonite and handing it out as gifts, perhaps to the males they were courting for breeding purposes?
And because the truth is stranger than fiction, archaeological evidence is surfacing to show that the Amazons really did exist!
The remains of female warriors have been found in a tomb in western Russia, where Greek legends claim the Amazons lived. The human remains tell us that they were nomadic women hunting and fighting with men, but there’s no proof about their mating habits or motherly instincts. At least not yet.
Because of amazonite’s association with female warriors, amulets or talismans made of this crystal were believed to give women strength and protection, empowering them with the bravery of the Amazon soldiers.
