Amethyst has a calming and soothing energy, making it one of the best crystals to sleep with. Many people put these crystals in their bedroom and use them for better sleep.

Sleeping with amethyst in your bedroom helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. This is because amethyst stops your mind from racing and soothes anxious feelings, so you sleep better.

Can you really use amethyst for sleep?

Amethyst has been used for centuries for its healing and relaxing properties. The crystal helps you get a better night’s sleep if you struggle with:

  • Insomnia
  • Headaches
  • Worries
  • Sadness
  • Light or broken sleep
  • Stress
  • Feeling vulnerable

Amethyst emits vibrations that calm and soothe those in a room or nearby. The crystal works with the crown and third eye chakras, which are all about spirituality and mindfulness. Keeping amethyst in your bedroom helps you relax and enter a deeper state of consciousness, which gives you better sleep.

How to use amethyst for better sleep

There are a few simple things to do to get the most from sleeping with amethyst…

Cleanse and charge the crystal

If you’ve just brought the amethyst home or you’ve been using it for some time without charging it, now’s a good time to do that.

The easiest way to cleanse and charge amethyst is to use one of the four elements: earth, fire, wind, or water. Simply place the crystal on the ground near healthy plants, in the smoke of a smudge stick (like these white sage sticks from Amazon) or incense, in your breath, or in water.

Leave the crystal there for a few hours or days so it can release old energy and revitalize itself with new energy.

I go into much more detail on how to cleanse and charge amethyst crystals in this blog post – so click on the blue link and take a look there, then choose whichever method works best for you.

Have an affirmation for better sleep

Before going to sleep at night or for a nap during the day, set your intention to sleep well and let the crystal know that you want a deep sleep.

Hold the crystal in your non-dominant hand. So, if you’re right-handed place the stone in your left hand and vice versa.

Your non-dominant side is your receiving side, and it helps the amethyst give you what you ask for.

Now use your affirmation, either saying it out loud a few times or speaking it in your mind. You’ll need to test and tweak your affirmation until you find something that really resonates with you.

You could start off with something like “I sleep better with you next to me” or “I’m about to have a deep sleep”.

Now it’s time to decide where to put your crystal before going to sleep.

Where to put amethyst when sleeping

You can keep amethyst in your bedroom for better sleep. Put it under your pillow, under the mattress, next to your bed, on your dresser, or in a grid formation. If you need better sleep while traveling without amethyst crystal, use an amethyst spray in your hotel room and on the bed.

Below is a list of the different places to keep amethyst in your room, along with my best tips on how to do this:

Under the pillow

Amethyst opens the crown and third eye chakras, which sit at the top of your head and on your forehead. So it’s a good idea to keep the crystal under your pillow when you sleep, close to your head.

My tip is to put the crystal under the pillow but inside the pillow case, so it doesn’t roll around or get lost during the night.

Under the mattress

Do you have an amethyst geode or dream tower that you want to keep in your room for better sleep?

An option is to keep it under your mattress.

A tower works under the mattress, on the bed base. But a geode or tower can be kept under the bed on the floor, if they aren’t too large or tall. Just make sure no animals or small children can get to it.

Place the crystal near the headboard, where your head lies at night, to connect it with your crown and third eye chakras.

On a bedside table

If you have the space, keep amethyst on the bedside table next to you. You can use any type of amethyst for this – raw, polished, a geode, a tower, jewelry, or an amethyst crystal night light.

If you keep your crystal on the bedside table, touch it every evening before going to bed while saying your affirmation for better sleep.

On your dresser

Keeping amethyst crystal on your dresser brings you all the sleep benefits, and it makes a lovely centerpiece for the room.

Display your crystals in a bowl made of natural materials, like wood or glass. Or use a selenite bowl like this one (Amazon link) to cleanse and keep your crystal charged.

In a grid formation

An amethyst grid around your bed creates a protective and calming energy field, which leads to deeper relaxation in the bedroom and better sleep at night. To do this, you’ll need at least five amethysts about the same size and shape.

Here’s how to make an amethyst grid in the bedroom:

First, find the center point under your bed and put the largest amethyst there.

Then put one crystal at the foot of the bed, one above the bed by the headrest, another on the left, and the last one on the right, forming a square around the bed.

To activate the grid, hold a clear quartz crystal in your non-dominant hand and focus your intention on promoting restful sleep and relaxation. Now visualize the amethyst crystals radiating a soothing and calming energy throughout your bedroom.

Leave the grid there for as long as you feel you need it, and recharge it with a clear quartz whenever you start struggling to sleep again.

In a bedroom when traveling

I don’t know about you but I often struggle to sleep when traveling. There’s something about a different bed and room that takes me a few nights to settle in.

If you’re traveling and want to use amethyst to sleep better, you can try any of these three methods:

Bring five small amethysts with you and make an amethyst grid on a table or dresser in the room. Place one larger crystal in the center, then put the others in a square around the center crystal. If you have clear quartz then charge the grid, or charge the crystals at home before you leave.

If you don’t want to travel with crystals, the easiest solution is to spray the room and bed with an amethyst-infused spray or burn these amethyst and clear quartz candles before going to bed.
